PHOTO BOOK: WHYS AND WHAT I USE

***Disclaimer: This is NOT a sponsored post, all opinions here are my own.

In this post I will be discussing the reasons why I make photo books and use Photobook Philippines.

Photobooks

I love taking pictures especially of the kids to the point that they already get annoyed.  “Mom, picture again?!”  is what they always say.  I cannot help it, I want to capture all those precious times that will never happen again.  They grow up too fast and seizing those moments thru photos is my way of preserving memories.

As a result, I end up with a ton of pictures on my phone, hard drive, CDs, USB, and cloud.  It has always been in my checklist to make physical photo albums like the ones that my Mom used to create.  But, just thinking of organizing all the snapshots, having them printed, buying the album and scrapbooking materials does not encourage me to make one.  So I have been procrastinating for years.

5 Reasons Why I Create Photo Books using Photobook Philippines

Then a few years back, I discovered Photobook Philippines.  I downloaded their app on my laptop and tried making my very first Photobook.  From that day on, I use Photobook to make photo albums, and here are the reasons why:

1.       Printed Memories

Nothing beats printed hard copy of photos! I make photo albums mainly to preserve memories.  I love seeing the photos printed out, arranged, and organized in a lovely album that I can actually touch.  With the use of Photobook, I can actually do a scrapbook digitally and they print it out with all the captions, notes, journals, etc in photo form.  They print high definition photos, a bit darker than what you see on your laptop screen but still very nice. You also get to choose the type of paper that will be used to print your project. Once I get the hard copy, I can go look at them over and over without the need of opening a gadget and navigating thru millions of photos.

2.       Easy

I learned about Photobook Philippines in 2018. I’ve been using their Photobook Designer that I downloaded on my laptop.  It is very easy to navigate with drag and drop functions.  My kids even help me do them.  They also have a mobile app available and a “Make Me a Book” option where they would make the album for you.  I find the Photobook Designer best since I have more control in the over-all design of the album, I can put more photos and I can make the project more personal.  Oh, they also have readily available templates that you can use. How easy is that?

This is what the Photobook Designer looks like.

3.       Economical

Did I mention that I get to have the 40-page photobooks (6×6 softcover) for only P170 each?  Yes, you read that right, P170.  I pay P20 for a Metrodeal voucher which you can get here and P150 standard shipping fee.  Do note that the P150 shipping fee is for EACH Photobook that you will be ordering, combination shipping is not allowed. Hopefully those Photobook Vouchers will continue to be available in Metrodeal.

After all the memories, love, time and effort invested in one album, it becomes priceless. There are also other sizes and makes offered, I just prefer the compact one.

If you’d like to know how I used the vouchers and only paid for P170 all-in, here’s my 20-Step Guide for PHP20 Photobook.

4.       Convenient

Making it in the comfort of my home, having control over the design and layout, doing away with printing the photos separately, not having to buy the physical album and other scrapbooking materials, and to top it off, it’s delivered right at my doorstep makes it really convenient for me to do it over and over.  I’ve done quite a lot but I’m still planning to do some more.

5.       Fun

It’s really fun to make, you get to relive all the memories that the photos bring.  I get ideas from my kids and as we look at the photos, we reminisce those happy moments. The kids get to share what they remember of those captured events and we put those memories in the photo books using captions, speech bubbles, notes, and other stickers.  Making photo books has been a bonding activity for our family.

  • Tortillas – Quesadilla, Fajitas, Soft Taco

We have been doing this for almost 3 years now and this schedule has been engraved in our hearts and minds. My kids are used to the schedule already. As a result, they have a favorite breakfast day. My eldest adores Fridays since he loves anything with rice and eggs. My youngest, on the other hand loves Pancake Sundays.

The schedule makes it easier for me to wake up every morning knowing or at least having an idea on what to prepare. It also ensures that the kids get variety and good nutrition in their morning meals.

You can make your own weekly breakfast schedule, involve your kids when making one, it would be fun!  You can put in themes like smoothies, shakes, soups, rolls, etc.  it’s all up to you.  Don’t forget to add fruits and veggies in your breakfast plan.

EASY KOREAN RADISH KIMCHI RECIPE (KKAKDUGI)

Korean Radish Kimchi or Kkakdugi

We love kimchi! One of our favorite kimchi is the Kkakdugi or Cubed Korean Radish Kimchi. If you are familiar with the Filipino Burong Labanos (Fermented Radish), this is the Korean version of it. It has that crunch from the radish, the sour taste from the fermentation plus a bit of sweetness and some garlicky spicy kick from the seasoning. It is very easy to make. Here’s my Easy Korean Radish Kimchi Recipe:

Easy Korean Radish Kimchi Recipe

Ingredients:

Brine

  • 2 kg Korean Radish
  • 1/4 c rock salt (coarse)*

Seasoning

  • 1.5 Tbsp chili powder **
  • 2 Tbsp minced garlic (about 6-7 cloves)
  • 1/2 tsp minced ginger
  • 3 Tbsp fish sauce
  • 1.5 Tbsp sugar
  • 2 leeks sliced thinly***

Procedure:

  • Clean the radishes by washing with water and scrubbing the skin.
  • If radishes are fresh and crisp with thin smooth skin, no need to peel. Only peel the radishes when skin is too thick or rough.
  • Cut the radishes into 1/2 – 1 inch thick discs, then cut into 1/2 – 1 inch cubes. Place in a large bowl.
  • Add the salt into the radish cubes. Mix well making sure that all the radish are properly salted. Let it sit for 40 minutes to an hour making the radishes release some liquid.
  • In small bowl mix all the ingredients for the seasoning (except the leeks) to make a paste.
  • Drain the salted radish cubes in a colander, discard the liquid. Do not rinse. Place the drained radish cubes in a large bowl.
  • Add the seasoning paste and the leeks.
  • Mix well until all the radish cubes are coated with the seasoning.
  • Store in an airtight container. Keep at room temperature for 1-2days. Refrigerate afterwards. Serve cold.****

Notes:

*I used coarse rock salt, you can use finer salt but adjust the amount (less salt if finer type is used).

**I used chili powder in this recipe but you can use red pepper flakes. Do take note that chili powder is spicier than the red pepper flakes. Also, using red pepper flakes (Gochugaru) will make your kimchi more red. Remember, it is better to put in less at the start, you can always add more if needed.

***You may use spring onions, scallions, chives, or even thinly sliced white onions as substitute for leeks.

****Kkakdugi will taste best after 3-4 days in the fridge when flavors are fully developed and the texture is still crisp. The radishes will get softer after a while, so, it’s better to make just enough to munch on for a week so the radishes will still have that crunch.

This recipe was adapted from koreanbapsang. I hope you get to try this Easy Korean Radish Kimchi Recipe and enjoy it with your family. You may try eating Kkakdugi with fried or grilled meat, rice, noodles, come to think of it, it can be eaten with anything. Stay healthy and safe! 🙂

5 SIMPLE WAYS WE HELP SAVE EARTH

The world celebrated Earth Day yesterday. It made me think of sharing how our household does our part to help save earth.  Here are 5 simple ways we do them:

Segregate

We use separate bins for biodegradable, non-biodegradable and recyclable items. As a result, we only throw a few items out as trash. Instead of dumping things, we reuse, we recycle and we make compost.

Segregate wastes at home.

Reuse

We bring reusable shopping bags when we go shopping to avoid plastic bags.  But there are instances we still get paper and plastic bags, so we gather them to be reused. We occasionally give those bags to our suki in the market so they can use them again.

Keep on reusing!

Recycle

We gather our recyclables and bring them to the recycling area in our community every week.  I remember a friend goes to the junk shop with her child to bring their recyclables, one way to teach children how to turn trash into cash.

recycle bottles, cans, cartons, papers

Compost/Vermicompost

We do composting at home. First, we place soil, fruit and vegetable scraps and dried leaves in a big pot. After that, we mix it from time to time to ensure aeration. Next is just to wait for it to turn into compost.

However, sometime last year we discovered that we could add worms to the bin so the process of composting will be faster and the end product will have more nutrients. We now have African night crawlers as pets for vermicomposting.

Plant

We love to plant.  Sometimes we grow plants and trees from seeds, sometimes from cuttings, others from roots.  We use the compost/vermicompost as fertilizer to make our plants healthy.   In the photos below, tetra packs, yogurt cups, and cans were recycled as planters for our plants and trees.

A small act could go a long way. As a family, let us do our part to help save our planet earth and our future. Let us make everyday Earth Day.

KEEPING KIDS BUSY AT HOME

During school break when kids are at home, I prepare different activities to keep them occupied.   My husband requests more outdoor physical activities. I, on the other hand, would like them to learn something that would be useful for them in the future. While the kids, of course, would want to use their gadgets all day.  In order to strike a balance, I would plan and make a schedule of activities to keep them busy.  To yield to my husband’s request, I have enrolled them in the past in swimming and tennis classes.  The kids get to have their gadget time after they finish the tasks assigned to them for the day. Here are some of the activities that they do during school break:

Keep Kids Busy with Reading Comprehension Activities

They read a book during summer to enhance their comprehension skills. There would be questions at the end of every chapter that they need to answer. There are also some vocabulary words that they need to define. Before, I would choose the book that fits their age and interest. But lately they choose their own book.  There are materials available online, we got some from Free Unit Studies website and Super Teachers Worksheet’ site. Here are just some of the books they read during school break:

Improve Children’s Handwriting

Handwriting is not given much importance nowadays because of the growth of technology. I believe that handwriting helps us to digest words more and helps us in our language processing skills.  Writing by hand allows us to slow down. It makes us think of the words we are writing, how they are spelled and how they fit the structure of the sentence we are creating/reading.

I’ve reinforced writing in print when they were younger and cursive when they were in higher grades.  My son told me that he appreciates that he could read teachers notes in cursive unlike his classmates. I’ve taught them both and they can choose which form they are more comfortable with.  They have practiced handwriting bible verses, famous quotes, word definitions, etc.

We found the cursive bible verses from Heart of Wisdom website. One whole set of cursive practice sheet is available in Activity Village, another one can be downloaded from This Reading Mama Website. We just did the movie quotes from scratch. Here are some of the works that they have done in the past:

Introduce Kids to Typing

After handwriting, the next thing I’ve taught them was typing.  In this computer era, it is a fundamental skill to learn how to use the keyboard efficiently.  There are a number of platforms where the kids could learn how to type accurate and fast. Some are in the form of games others are in the form of drills and exercises.  They appreciate that they learned typing at an early age. They now enjoy typing fast and accurate in doing their projects in school or even in playing games or chatting online with their friends.  We used Dance Mat Typing and Typing Club for our typing exercises.

Sharpen Kids Math Skills at Home

For me, one of the skill that needs to be strengthened is Math.  Having confidence in basic arithmetic is very important so kids would not get intimidated by any form of Mathematics.  When they were in first and second grade we focused on addition and subtraction.  In the years after, multiplication then division.  We use drill sheets, games – online and downloaded, flashcards, books, etc.  You can check out one of my posts on mastering the multiplication table. Some of the resources that we used came from Math-Aids.com and tlsbooks.com.

Dive into Arts and Crafts

To tap into the kids’ artistic side, we did some painting, drawing, sketching, etc. Here are some of the kids output throughout the years. Check out Mr. Otter Art Studio in you tube for simple and easy to follow artworks that kids can do. You may try water color techniques, simple landscape, sunset and a whole lot more. We also did some t-shirt printing, scrapbooking, upcycling which I will discuss in detail in another post.

Involve Kids in the Kitchen

Another life skill that I want the kids to learn is to cook and bake. Thus, I intentionally taught them basic cooking and baking when they are on school break. I would make them familiar with cooking and baking equipment and terminologies while we were using or doing them.  They had hands-on training when it comes to the kitchen. During their younger years they would chop tomatoes, peel garlic, wash the veggies etc.   Lately, they get to cook the dish that they want. I would just be the one to buy the ingredients and to guide them on what to do.

Acquaint Young Ones with Nature

Living in the city has its pros and cons. One of the cons is that children are not familiar with plants and trees since they are surrounded by concrete structures. In order for my children to get a feel of nature, I encourage them to plant. This activity shows them how a tiny seed becomes a plant or a tree with just water, sunshine and air. It teaches them to be responsible having to take care of the plants, making sure that their plant gets what it needs. They get to appreciate nature more, getting to see God’s hand at work with His other creations such as the vegetation.

For this exercise, we use seeds from the kitchen scraps like tomatoes, kalamansi, squash, bell peppers, chili peppers. Sometimes we get to experiment with root crops like gabi and fruit seeds like avocado, papaya, mango, jackfuit etc. Some of their plants have been transplanted in the province and are bearing fruits already like papayas.

Teach Children the Art of Selling

We also did selling. The kids help me prepare food to sell and actually sell them in our front yard. Not only did this boost their confidence, it increased their human interaction. It also sharpened their math skills when calculating the total amount and and giving change to their customers. They actually enjoyed this activity and they look forward to it every year.

Once they are done with their assigned task for the day, they are free to use their time. We only do one or two activity per day so they still have free time to do their own stuff. We also make sure that they take breaks when they are using their gadgets.

Hope this article gave you some ideas that you can do with your kids while they are at home.  Remember to always have fun. May God bless us always. ♥
